Intertational Coffee Day: Dalgona Coffee

I recently discovered that the 1st of October is International coffee day. For those of you who love coffee as much as I do, this day is worth celebrating.

In March 2014, the members of the International Coffee Organisation (ICO) named the 1st of October to be the International Coffee day. The ICO's main mission is to face the difficulties facing the importing and exporting of coffee and the sustainable expansion. For more information on the ICO and International Coffee Day click here to visit their website.

This year the International Coffee Day campaign was about Coffee’s Next Generation. Even before COVID 19, it was difficult for young men and women to enter the coffee industry. Furthermore, families already in the coffee industry are switching to other industries they believe is more sustainable and profitable. This is due to environmental challenges and the low prices they receive for coffee. The outbreak of the COVID 19 pandemic placed even more pressure on the coffee industry.

International Coffee Day is a means to raise awareness for these matters, but also a day to appreciate and enjoy the coffee beverage. A day to brew your favourite coffee, relax, take in the aroma and enjoy the cup of coffee. Maybe even try a new coffee or two.

I can’t imagine a world without coffee. That fuel in the morning to give you a boost or at work a little extra strength and endurance. I have even heard people referring to coffee as anti-murdery juice – to which I can relate!

So, on 1 October I decided to try something new and came across a Dalgona Coffee. It was an absolute delight! Not only does it look exciting, but it is also strong, fluffy, sweet and delicious! The milk can be used warm or cold making it perfect to warm you up on a cold day or refresh you on a warm sunny day. I, however, prefer my coffee warm.

Even though this year’s International Coffee day has already passed I hope you find some time to enjoy a cup of coffee to celebrate and also support the coffee industry in this difficult time.

I leave you with the recipe that I used for the Dalgona Coffee and hope that it will bring you as much pleasure as it did me!

Recipe:

Ingredients:

30 ml coffee

30 – 45 ml sugar

30 ml warm water

400 ml milk

Method:

  1. Add the coffee, sugar and water together.

  2. Using a whisk or handheld mixer, beat the coffee, sugar and water until the mix is light brown and forms fluffy points (about 10 min).

  3. Divide the warm/cold milk between 2 cups.

  4. Scoop the coffee mix on top of the milk.

  5. Sprinkle some coffee or coffee beans on top for a final touch.

  6. Mix the coffee into the milk and enjoy!

Notes:

  • When scooping the coffee mix on to the milk, start from the outside and move inwards. This allows the mix to stick on the side and prevents it from sinking into the milk.

  • You can adjust the sugar measurement to your taste.
